The Big Guy! Jodee Rich Co-Producer of #NFTNYC

00:01
and we are live here we saved the best
00:04
the biggest for last i think
00:08
i have gotcha
00:09
joey rich the co-producer the force the
00:13
man behind
00:16
nftnyc
00:18
which is really just put itself on the
00:20
map wonderfully over the past few years
00:22
and i think really this time
00:24
has established its footprint as one of
00:26
the premier conferences in the world
00:29
well you are amazing for saying that
00:31
thank you
00:33
new york is amazing new york is amazing
00:35
the community is amazing it’s you know
00:37
it’s really been
00:39
an extraordinary experiment to see how
00:41
the community can manage itself into a
00:43
conference
00:44
we we started it in august 2018 with my
00:48
friends at openc and cameron vale on my
00:50
team
00:51
and uh and we said you know we have
00:53
three things that we want to achieve one
00:56
we want the community to have a voice
00:58
that means to put as many people on
01:00
stage as possible
01:02
and so we do this wild and crazy thing
01:04
there are no gaps
01:07
no gaps and 120 people per stage per day
01:12
and uh it’s just on and off 10 minute
01:14
lightning talk if you can’t say what you
01:16
need to say in 10 minutes then you just
01:18
got to do it
01:19
so that’s one thing the second thing is
01:21
we want to bring we want to bring the
01:24
people who have similar ideas together
01:26
so that we minimize the duplication of
01:28
effort and we maximize the sharing
01:30
and you know that’s been one of our
01:32
values since day one and the last thing
01:33
which i think we’ve failed on in
01:35
previous years
01:36
is you know sharing with the broader
01:38
community and it’s only been this year
01:40
that we’ve attracted so much mainstream
01:42
interest this year we’ve had over 250
01:45
reporters want to be here
01:47
this year we’ve
01:49
turned on times square billboards
01:53
i don’t know if you were there on the
01:54
red steps yesterday no you weren’t you
01:56
just flew in so at 8 30 yesterday
01:58
morning 11 of the beautiful billboards
02:00
on times square were our canvas the
02:03
canvas for about a thousand nfts
02:06
and we all sat on the red steps at the
02:08
northern end and watched the show
02:11
and that that was actually that was an
02:13
extraordinary moment because
02:14
that made us you know this ecosystem
02:17
feel like we were showing the world
02:20
why nfts are important well it must be
02:22
just an amazing feeling i’m sure it was
02:24
surreal
02:25
to say hey i wasn’t i think i’m still
02:27
pinching myself so just about how big
02:29
all of this is and this is an experiment
02:32
because we think we can be three or four
02:33
times bigger or we will be because
02:35
this year we had
02:37
five and a half thousand tickets sold
02:39
and there were three thousand on a
02:40
waitlist
02:41
so we think that in june next year we’ll
02:43
be somewhere between 10 and 20 000
02:45
attendees and
02:47
you know it’s not even a conference we
02:49
like to think it’s a festival right and
02:51
one of the wild and crazy things we do
02:53
is we’ve approved 51 of everyone who’s
02:56
applied to speak
02:57
one because the applications were very
02:59
high quality
03:01
and um
03:02
and two um you sort of went back to that
03:05
value where we want to create panels of
03:07
people who have similar things to talk
03:09
about
03:09
and the experiment was the panels were
03:12
self-assembling
03:13
so if you said you know generated was
03:15
your thing
03:16
then we automatically put the generative
03:18
people together we automatically sent
03:20
them an email and said you organize
03:21
yourselves produce your deck and work
03:24
out who the moderator is
03:25
and you know it’s worked in 97 of the
03:28
cases
03:29
wow well it really is amazing and you
03:31
know the the space
03:32
has some spectacular people i mean you
03:35
were just uh talking with brock pierce
03:37
and you know they were talking politics
03:39
and you know different different parts
03:41
yeah well brock thinks that nfts
03:43
should be in politics for several
03:45
reasons you know fundraising which is
03:47
fairly obvious the one that’s not so
03:48
obvious though that really
03:50
interests me is nfps can be a very very
03:53
direct way
03:55
for you to engage with your audience you
03:56
know no algorithms in the middle no no
03:59
social network containers to fiddle and
04:01
you can own the content and if i give
04:03
you you know in fact
04:04
i made an agreement with brock on stage
04:06
this afternoon and he said that we could
04:08
mint a thousand collectible brock
04:11
speaker cards
04:13
that people have them and he said that
04:15
he would then communicate through those
04:17
nfts with the thousand people wow and i
04:19
said brock you know what do you
04:21
communicate he said well people are
04:22
going to hold me to my promises people
04:25
are going to hold me to the things that
04:26
i say i’m going to get done in the
04:28
political environment we all know that
04:29
the issue is
04:31
people make promises
04:33
power is corrupting they don’t follow
04:35
through with the promises
04:36
and we are going to inscribe the
04:39
promises on the collectible nfts that he
04:42
shares
04:43
with the people who vote for him well
04:45
that’s amazing so more history and you
04:47
know the whole the event is historic of
04:49
course the movement that we have been a
04:52
part of for all these years is historic
04:55
and of course the event is historic so
04:56
it is amazing that you have that on
04:59
stage and and moving that forward so
05:02
let’s talk uh you had so many people
05:04
come here it’s more of a festival that
05:06
it’s really turning into and you get
05:08
that feeling um you know what is that
05:11
and you would 100 and something you said
05:13
a journalist and media that wanted over
05:15
200 reporters that’s this is amazing
05:18
that’s great
05:19
that’s our third value you know
05:20
proselytize share with the community and
05:23
this is just the beginning yeah you know
05:25
and when you say a historic moment um
05:27
[Music]
05:28
great guy from rolling stone magazine
05:30
larry um he said to us a couple of times
05:33
and i i recorded him
05:34
um he said he thinks this is like the
05:37
woodstock moment it’s the woodstock
05:39
moment and i’m really proud to proud to
05:41
be here you know so glad you came on uh
05:44
with us and really appreciate it so as
05:46
far as this woodstock moment that we
05:49
have in nfts and and four year
05:51
conference and here in new york and this
05:53
historic coveted times and everything
05:55
else what is the most exciting thing
05:57
that you see coming out of the nft space
06:00
it’s the popularizing of nfts i mean you
06:03
saw michael rupino the ceo of live
06:05
nation sent out a few days ago a release
06:08
that you know
06:10
biggest ticketing company in the world
06:12
is embracing nfts
06:14
so all of the things that we wished for
06:16
thank you universe all the things we
06:18
wish for in 2019 and 2020
06:20
is that you know major brands and
06:22
enterprise help us get this incredible
06:25
technology out you know and why is the
06:27
technology incredible
06:29
it’s incredible because for the first
06:31
time we have a technology object that
06:34
allows you to register the things
06:37
that are your virtual assets you know
06:39
the your pictures
06:41
um it could be your domain names could
06:42
be an hour of your time
06:44
and instead of sort of throwing it off
06:46
the cliff and and waiting for it to
06:48
to drop into the container called the
06:50
social network
06:52
you can now own these things and you can
06:54
own them and use them in a virtual
06:56
environment like a game or you can pull
06:58
them out same the same nft and you can
07:01
put it on your profile or you can put it
07:03
on your wall
07:04
so we we actually have a thing now that
07:06
is connecting our aspirational worlds
07:09
our dream worlds with our real physical
07:11
life
07:14
it’s a mouthful it’s profound it is
07:16
profound and it’s tribal and it’s
07:18
collaborative and as garyvee and i
07:21
discussed yesterday
07:22
it also can create value yes
07:25
there’s no doubt now it takes in a you
07:28
know a lot of leadership and vision in
07:31
order to assemble an event like this it
07:33
also takes an amazing team
07:35
uh to put that together and of course
07:37
the leadership
07:39
you know the team is a reflection of the
07:41
leadership so let’s talk about uh the
07:43
team what does it take to to pull off an
07:46
event like this
07:47
so
07:48
cameron bell and i uh the co-founders we
07:50
also had a lot of help from um our
07:52
friends at openc alex and devon
07:54
particularly in the early years
07:56
and we really believe the smaller the
07:58
team the better which is pretty wild
08:00
thing to say
08:01
um
08:02
julie lamb uh has helped us with
08:04
volunteers we’ve had a big team of
08:05
volunteers and they’ve been amazing
08:08
what we’re about is trying to
08:10
trying to um enable the community so
08:13
they can do as much as possible
08:15
and you know when you sign up as a
08:16
speaker you tell us all these things as
08:19
i mentioned earlier allow us to sort of
08:21
self-assemble you into panels
08:23
um we used to speak to every every
08:26
person who applied we can’t do that
08:28
anymore
08:29
and um you know we’re going to send a
08:31
survey out on friday i think the
08:33
experiment worked i mean everyone i
08:35
bumped into who said
08:37
wow the content has been incredible and
08:39
the interesting thing was one of our
08:41
team members said to me a few months ago
08:42
oh we need some celebrities and i said
08:44
no no we are not about celebrities we
08:47
are about giving the community a voice
08:50
and i think the community understands
08:51
that
08:52
and then normally
08:54
communities follow celebrities what’s
08:56
happened here is the celebrities have
08:59
followed the community
09:00
and so the biggest struggle for us over
09:03
the last few weeks has been all of the
09:05
celebrities who at the very last moment
09:07
have had their pr people contact us and
09:10
we’ve yes we have we’ve
09:12
we’ve scrambled to try and fit them in
09:16
oh well i mean to name a few we had
09:17
quentin tarantino last night of course
09:20
uh he was yesterday afternoon was
09:22
yesterday morning afternoon yeah um
09:24
you’re uh you’re wonderful
09:27
alexis ohanian from um reddit
09:30
uh bill ty who’s a buddy kiteboarding
09:33
buddy and he was there you know brock
09:36
um
09:37
we’ve had some amazing people jimmy
09:39
wales the founder of wikipedia he
09:41
contacted me a few weeks ago and he said
09:43
you know jody this feels like the
09:45
beginning of wikipedia
09:47
you know the way we’re putting this
09:48
together
09:50
and it just gave me goosebumps and and
09:52
we sort of immediately had chemistry and
09:55
he was fantastic today that’s amazing so
09:58
you know this uh
09:59
as i always talk about the the
10:00
revolution uh the blockchain revolution
10:03
and now i feel like coming in of course
10:05
to this nft revolution i know you’ll
10:07
probably take some time off after this
10:09
uh your next event you’ve mentioned is
10:11
engineering next year next year yeah uh
10:14
so that’s gonna be absolutely amazing do
10:16
you have any venues or
10:19
that’s what we have to do we we’re
10:21
about 70 through finding the 10 venues
10:23
that we need and our vision is for this
10:25
to be a festival on broadway here we are
10:28
in the city that for centuries has been
10:30
the financial capital of the world
10:32
that for the last
10:34
eighty eight decades has been the
10:36
cultural capital of the world arts music
10:38
fashion
10:39
and
10:40
guess what it gives us this beautiful
10:42
canvas in times square so we’re gonna
10:45
line up the venues
10:46
so you can walk through times square see
10:48
your nft projects and hear uh your
10:51
favorite thought leaders well absolutely
10:54
amazing you know thank you so much for
10:55
coming on if you have some final
10:57
thoughts that you’d like to uh to share
10:59
and be great
11:00
i think my final thoughts are that
11:04
these big companies have called us users
11:07
you know and brands talked about user
11:09
generated content thank you ugc
11:11
well
11:13
we have a technology that is turning us
11:15
all into
11:16
creators
11:17
and
11:18
there’s not a single company that can
11:21
take over the platform the platform is
11:24
not for sale you cannot put no matter
11:27
how big you are
11:28
no matter what you call yourself you
11:30
cannot take over the ethereum blockchain
11:34
you cannot take over these level twos so
11:36
when i put my nfts and my content onto
11:39
these platforms i have a scaffold for
11:42
creating community that no one can take
11:45
away from me
11:47
amazing
11:48
jody rich thank you so much for coming
11:50
very much really appreciate it
11:52
guys the big guy we end with this so
11:55
excited
11:56
see you in june guys
