Hamdan Azhar speaking at Versace Mansion during Miami Blockchain Week - Washington Elite Interview
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

“We got into this because we wanted to make the world a better, freer place.”

MIAMI BLOCKCHAIN WEEK 2020

In a raw and unfiltered conversation at the iconic Versace Mansion, Hamdan Azhar — longtime right-hand man to blockchain pioneer Nick Spanos — stepped onto the stage and delivered a message that cut straight to the heart of the industry’s future.

The Confluence of Technology and Power

“We are at the confluence of two very powerful forces of human society,” Azhar explained. “Technology — blockchain especially — that most people don’t understand, paired with politicians who are in the business of not understanding what’s happening in the world.”

The Greatest Invention — and the Greatest Risk

Azhar echoed the view of early adopters: blockchain is the single greatest invention of our lifetime, perhaps of the past century. Banks, corporations, and governments are racing to adopt it, creating working groups, labs, and initiatives at breakneck speed.

Yet he issued a clear warning: adoption alone does not equal legitimacy. “We have to be very cautious,” Azhar stressed. “Why are they getting into this? What are the original guiding ethos of this technology, and how do we protect that ethos?”

He reminded the audience of Bitcoin’s underground beginnings in New York City — secret trades in alleys, meetups at Whole Foods because no other venue would allow them. “It was something people were ashamed of,” he recalled. “Now, seemingly overnight, the biggest entities in the world have embraced it.”

“The same technology that people thought could free them is actually ending up imprisoning them. Smart cities is a code word for surveillance.”

Freedom vs. Surveillance: The Battle for Blockchain’s Soul

Azhar did not shy away from the dark side. Governments are already repurposing blockchain and related technologies for total surveillance — every transaction, every step, every purchase tracked in a central database and used to curtail human freedoms.

“That is the elephant in the room,” he said. “This incredible new technology could be used to surveil us and dominate us like nothing we have ever seen before.”

The solution? Stay vigilant. Remember the original mission. “We didn’t get into this to get rich,” Azhar declared. “We got into this because we wanted to make the world a better, freer place.”

Nick Spanos: The Man Behind the Movement

Azhar then turned the spotlight to his mentor, Nick Spanos — a man whose public persona as a mechanic and real-estate investor belies a far more extraordinary background. From organizing motorcades for world leaders and working with the Ecumenical Patriarch in Constantinople, to sharing cigars with Fidel Castro and escorting Mikhail Gorbachev on his first tour of North America, Spanos has walked in the corridors of global power.

“Nick could be sitting right now having cigars in Venezuela, Moscow, or the White House,” Azhar shared. “But he’s here in Miami, teaching people about Bitcoin and blockchain — because he believes this is the technology that can free humanity.”

A Call to the Vanguard

Closing on a note of urgency and hope, Hamdan Azhar urged the community to remain at the forefront of the fight for liberty. “The future is bright. We were born free, and we owe it to ourselves to stand up and embrace our destiny. It’s so close — we’re almost there.”

Hamdan Azhar has worked alongside Nick Spanos for over a decade, helping shape the narrative and strategy of one of blockchain’s most passionate advocates. His message that night at the Versace Mansion was clear: blockchain must remain a tool of liberation, not control.

The Washington Elite Awards Ceremony & Charity Gala once again proved itself to be more than an event — it was a powerful platform for ideas that will shape the next decade of technology, finance, and human freedom.
